Tite leaves the team without a sixth and marked by the World Cup, but leaves a legacy

Tite signed yesterday (17) the termination of his contract with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). Now officially he is no longer coach of the Brazilian national team after more than six years.

  • There were 81 matches in the period, with 60 wins, 15 draws and six losses. The work ends with a success rate of 80.2%.
  • Tite was Copa América champion in 2019 and runner-up in 2021. He had two devastating campaigns in qualifying and two eliminations in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
  • The gaucho is now the third coach who has won the most games in the national team, behind only Zagallo and Parreira.

Tite’s replacement is still unknown. The CBF wants a manager with an offensive style and who is “respectable”, i.e. renowned. The preference is for a foreign star, such as the already consulted Guardiola and Ancelotti. Regardless of his name, he will receive an inheritance from the former commander.

The World Cup cancels the homologation

Tite led the national team at the 2018 and 2022 World Cupswith two eliminations in the quarterfinals against non-world champions European sides, Belgium and Croatia.

The defeats have left permanent negative marks on the image of the first manager left in charge after being knocked out in the cup in 40 years.

The history of the research of the Datafolha institute illustrates well the decline in consensus in the six years of work. On the eve of the 2018 World Cup, the rate of people who thought Tite’s work was good or outstanding was 64%. After the World Cup in Qatar there was the worst number of the entire study, only 29%.

In Russia, Tite’s loyalty to his chosen starters before the World Cup was sealed, mainly Gabriel Jesus. In Qatar, the call-up of Daniel Alves at the age of 39 and without playing for two months, Raphinha’s title and defensive disorganization in Croatia’s run for goal were the highlights.

Time may answer better, I can’t evaluate all the work that has been done. You guys [jornalistas] I will too.”

The next coach doesn’t start from scratch

Tite has renewed the squad of the Brazilian national team in the six years of work, mainly between Russia and Qatar. Of the 88 players called up over the last four years, 50 were Amarelinha debutants. Some have claimed, such as Richarlison, Vini Jr, Militão, Bruno Guimarães, Raphinha and Paquetá.

The way has also been paved for names that should continue to be influential in the national team., such as Rodrygo, Gabriel Martinelli and Antony. The young forwards break the ice at the World Cup and arrive more experienced and prepared for the cycle until 2026, in a scenario that shows that the attack is resolved for the next manager.

Taking the result off the pitch, the perception at the CBF is that the job in the Brazilian team has been well done in administrative terms under Tite’s command. The internal processes, the integration with the base, the division of labour, the professionalisation of the technical and physical performance analysis sectors and the conditions for observing the players are considered positive points.

This was only possible because the technical commission that is now saying goodbye to the CBF has set up daily work at the institution’s headquarters, in Rio de Janeiro. Before Tite, team work was only during match periods. With him the workload became daily and face-to-face, with the exception of trips for face-to-face observation of players or meetings with international clubs.

All pros were fired along with Tite, but the working system remains a legacy. The CBF has said it plans to cancel the fee in 2023.

Cup qualifiers became Barbada

Tite took charge in June 2016 to replace Dunga, who had left the side sixth in qualifying. The bad campaign was reversed and Brazil went on to top place at the World Cup in Russia. Also in view of the round in Qatar, the coach closes the job without ever having lost a match in the Qualifiers. There have been 14 wins and three draws and 13 of 17 games without conceding a goal.

Last year Brazil consolidated the best record by a team in the history of South American qualifiers in this format, which has been played since 2002. The one with one game less, because a derby against Argentina was even cancelled.

With Tite, qualifying for the World Cup has become a formality, in a scenario that was not like this before him. The coach has also been ahead of the team in two editions of the Copa América, with a title (2019) and a runner-up (2021).

The characteristic language has drawn criticism

Despite having been known since his Corinthians days, Tite’s particular delivery has attracted attention in recent years, with imitations, curtsies and even criticism for his far-fetched speech and use of words and expressions such as “unbalanced outsides” , “extreme third”. , “fast legs” and “performa”.

Over the years, Tite has tried to change this way of expressing himself. After a conversation with SporTV commentator Paulo César Vasconcellos, he came to the conclusion that the national coach spoke to the world of football and, at the same time, to a wider social world that includes different segments.

Since then, the depth of speech and the use of words has come to depend on the question asked. If the question was about tactics, the answer included tactical terms. If it was a broader topic, the language was simpler and more direct.

Tite also abolished the term merit from his vocabulary, previously marked as the symbol of its language. He concluded that the word was too categorical, when in reality it was only the manifestation of his opinion or his position.

Social issues have gained importance

During Tite’s move to the national team, his daughter Gabriele Bachi graduated in Social Sciences. Family life has given the coach insight into broader issues than the day-to-day life of the team.

At press conferences, Tite wore pins with pro-vaccination symbols on the lapel of his jacket. at the time of launching the immunization campaign against covid-19 and on the cause of childhood diabetes, for example. She also condemned her son’s likes and helped Matheus in internet posts about transphobia, machismo and gender-based violence in 2021.

This is how Tite deepened the contact with players who could create problems during the work. For Neymar, the captain’s belt came and went. With Richarlison, he insisted on not using him as a centre-forward until he finally gave up close to the Cup. With Marquinhos he managed the dissatisfaction with the reserve in 2018. In the end, all the players sent emotional messages to say goodbye to the coach.

The challenge is to remain relevant in the market

Tite intends to stay away from football for at least six months. There are two reasons beyond the rest and the withdrawal with the family after six years in the national team: he wants to have surgery for a recurring knee problem; and he also wants to wait for the opening of the European market for 2023/2024.

Tite’s plan is for the next professional challenge to be a European club or a national team. Has ease with Spanish and Italian languages. The coach’s manager received inquiries, but was not authorized to enter into any negotiations.

Tite’s challenge is to remain a relevant name in the market for the next few yearsa reality that their predecessors in the failed selection at the World Cup did not experience.

Dunga, for example, has not worked since leaving the national team in 2016. Coach in 2006, Carlos Alberto Parreira was in the South African national team, in Fluminense for less than 30 games and then in a coordination role. He hasn’t worked since 2014. After the 2018 World Cup, 2002 world champion Felipão was Brazilian champion at Palmeiras, but made unsuccessful switch to Cruzeiro, Grêmio and Chinese football until he retired to Athletico-PR, where he became director this year.
