“For memory, for justice and so that it doesn’t happen again”. This is the phrase that Netflix has used to advertise its new production, which will tell one of the saddest episodes in the history of Rio Grande do Sul. On Wednesday 25 the streaming platform launches Every Day at the Same Night, a series in five chapters, produced by Morena Filmes.
The work was inspired by the book of the same name in which the journalist Daniela Arbex recounts the tragedy that took place at the Kiss nightclub. Next Friday, the 27th, the unprecedented event will be ten years old. On January 27, 2013, 242 young people lost their lives in a fire at the Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria. The case has yet to be resolved in a judicial setting, following the conviction of four defendants and subsequent jury mistrial on December 10, 2021.

The fictitious plot will reproduce different moments of the night of the fire. One part, in particular, will show one of the characters who made the tragedy, considered the greatest in the history of Rio Grande do Sul, even worse. Currently working in the highly complex red ward of Santa Cruz Hospital (HSC), physician Carlos Fernando Drumond Dornelles, 44, was working at the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) in Santa Maria at the time of the Kiss fire.
We owe him the management of the crisis that had occurred in the health area, in the city, and he made decisions that led to the rescue of many young people in those days. Part of his story in the episode, told in full in an interview for the series of reports The Tragedy of the Kiss: Judgmentreleased by Journal before the defendants’ jury in 2021, will now also be detailed on Netflix. Actor Pablo Sanábio, who starred in series such as SOS Emergência and Sob Pressão, both of Rede Globo, will play Dornelles in the miniseries.

The similarity between the two is eye catching. “I had known for a long time that I was developing a five-episode production for Netflix and that my story would be told, but I didn’t follow through with the production. I will watch it when it comes out. I know it will be a very suggestive series, full of details and which tells the stories of the characters from Daniela’s book, of which I am a part in the first chapter, entitled War”, commented Dornelles.
He has been invited to participate in the launch of the series, which will take place in Santa Maria, and is considering whether he will be able to travel to the city. This Friday, the journalist Daniela Arbex underlined that the role of Sanábio proves to be a great tribute to all health professionals. “Through this character, we get to honor all these great heroes, who worked tirelessly to care for these people and minimize suffering,” commented the author.

The work will help the audience understand how it all happened
In order not to embarrass the population of Santa Maria, the production of Todo Dia a Mesma Noite has chosen not to record in the city. However, there were eight days of production in Bagé. The miniseries will be distributed in over 180 countries by Netflix. Unlike the videos and photos that circulated after the Kiss fire, the series details the stories behind the tragedy, such as Dornelles, who was asleep when it was triggered, and family members who ended up losing their Dear.
“The miniseries makes the impression people had on the book more tangible. It will be something closer to what happened. I think this has an informative and, above all, educational power, as it brings information on prevention, treatment, police investigations, which facilitate people’s understanding of how it happened,” stressed the HSC doctor, who is a former soldier and worked for the Army on a mission to Haiti in 2010.

The series is directed by Júlia Rezende, directed by Carol Minêm and written by Gustavo Lipsztein. In the cast, in addition to Sanábio, there are Thelmo Fernandes, Paulo Gorgulho, Bianca Byington, Leonardo Medeiros, Débora Lamm, Raquel Karro, Bel Kowarick, Erom Cordeiro, Paola Antonini, Nicolas Vargas, Flávio Bauraqui and Laila Zaid. “It is a great responsibility to tell an imaginary story inspired by a real event that destroyed the lives of so many people and shocked the country. We want to shed light, in the most sensitive and honorable way possible, on the perspective of those who have experienced all this up close and still live today,” said director Júlia Rezende.
The author Daniela Arbex told what it was like to be part of this production. “The result is a very powerful work, which takes us out of our comfort zone to put ourselves in the shoes of these families and rethink our present, so that we can understand how we got here and what we can do differently to change the future. ”, underlined Daniela. “I stay in touch with the families and have never lost touch with the story. It is a privilege to transform the emotional memory into a work of miniseries quality, which will allow us to tell this story that will touch the whole world.”

In addition to Every Day at the Same Night, another series, this documentary, entitled Boate Kiss: A Tragédia de Santa Maria, will be distributed by Globoplay on Thursday, the day after the premiere of the Netflix production. Also divided into five episodes, the work, directed by the Gaucho journalist Marcelo Canellas and produced in collaboration with the audiovisual collective of Santa Maria TV Ovo, recounts the suffering of the parents of the victims and survivors of the fire.
