Because 27% ethanol in gasoline doesn’t help you save money at the gas station

Mandatory by law, adding ethanol to regular gasoline at a rate of 27% has, among other goals, reduced dependence on foreign oil and also reduced the cost of fuel for consumers.

However, in recent days, ethanol hasn’t helped the gas station attendant save money: considering the price and consumption, about 30% more than gasoline, fuel derived from sugar cane is currently only profitable in one Brazilian state: the Mato Grosso.

It’s true that ethanol added to gasoline is anhydrous, without water, while ethanol sold at gas stations is hydrated. However, both are more expensive and one of the reasons is that they have the same raw material: sugar cane, whose supply is low.

We are in the low season for sugar cane, which leads to a decrease in the supply of ethanol on the market and, consequently, an increase in prices both at the plants and at the pumps” Douglas Pina, general manager of mobility at Edenred Brasil

The executive adds that the supply of ethanol on the market should increase between February and March, with the start of the next sugar cane harvest, reflecting on the reduction in fuel prices for consumers.

Edendred owns the logistics and fleet management company Ticket Log – which, at the request of UOL Carrosthe survey on the average prices of ethanol and gasoline practiced in the Federal District and in the Brazilian states in the first weeks of this year (see the complete survey below).

According to Ticket Log, 2023 started with gasoline and ethanol on the rise across the country.

In the last couple of months, ethanol has gotten more expensive: in December the price of a liter of petrol fell by 1.1% compared to November. In the same period, ethanol increased by 0.6%, Pina points out.

He adds that, in the first half of January, the two fuels recorded increases, but ethanol closed the period at R$ 4.44, up 2.74%; already and gasoline cost 1.59% more, sold at R $ 5.35 per liter.

Since October 1, we have had an overall increase of 12% for ethanol and 1% for gasoline” Douglas Pina

The prices listed below do not yet include the 7.47% readjustment for stationary gasoline, announced last Tuesday (26) by Petrobras.

How to know if ethanol is beneficial

  • The definition of the states where ethanol is most beneficial is based on the IPTL (Ticket Log Price Index)
  • Index indicates the cost in Reais per kilometer travelled, taking into account the average price of a liter of fuel and the average consumption
  • Consumption is set at 8.5 km/l for alcohol and 11.5 km/l for petrol. There are variations depending on the vehicle
  • It must be considered that the fuel of vegetable origin increases consumption by about 30%, with an upward or downward variation.
  • For this reason it is advisable to use ethanol only when the price difference exceeds the reduction in range in percentage terms.
