Galaxy A23 x Redmi Note 11 Pro: which mobile is the best choice with 5G?

On January 16, Samsung launched the Galaxy A23 5G, a new version of its mid-range mobile that occupies the first steps of this segment. One of the attractions is the support for 5G networks, something that is becoming more and more mandatory among smartphones.

In the trenches of the market, one of the rivals of this device will be the already veteran Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G, a modernized version of the 2022 model of the same name, with a new processor and the possibility of using 5G.

Considering the official prices, this comparison would not make much sense. After all, Samsung suggests selling its novelty for BRL 2,299 (in retailers it can be found from BRL 1,620), while Xiaomi charges BRL 3,679.99 in its official store (on retail sites you can buy it for BRL $ 1,970).

On the market, however, it is common to find the Chinese device at prices close to R$ 2,200, which makes this fight possible.

Samsung Galaxy A23 5G

  • Height: 165.4mm
  • Width: 76.9mm
  • Thickness: 8.4mm
  • Weight: 197g

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G

  • Height: 164.2mm
  • Width: 76.1mm
  • Thickness: 8.1mm
  • Weight: 202g

Measures similar in size and weight. Even in the available colors they are similar: black, white or blue.

What is different is the type of finish on the back, plastic on Samsung and glass on Xiaomi (it gives a more refined look).

Even the front gives this impression: the camera occupies only a spot at the top of the screen, in contrast to a curved cutout on the Samsung.

Still on the panel, points in favor of Xiaomi are the edges around the display, thinner than those of the Galaxy A23 5G.

VERDICT: Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G

Samsung Galaxy A23 5G

  • 6.6 inch (16.76 cm) PLS LCD.
  • Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2408 pixels
  • Refresh rate: 120Hz

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G

  • 6.67 inch (16.94 cm) Super AMOLED.
  • Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels
  • Refresh rate: 120Hz

Considering the size and resolutions, there is a technical tie.

The refresh rate is also the same and high, something that tends to please mostly those who use a mobile phone to watch videos and play games: higher refresh rates tend to present moving images more smoothly.

This comparison, however, won’t end in a tie for one reason: the technology used in the screen.

The Galaxy A23 5G’s is competent, no doubt, but Xiaomi’s Super Amoled display (a technology which, interestingly, is created by Samsung) is superior and tends to provide nicer images while using less battery.

VERDICT: Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G.

Samsung Galaxy A23 5G

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G

The battery of both carries that “magic capacity” that has become standard among mid-range cellphones. It tends to be enough to not have to recharge your smartphone every day.

The good news is that both devices come with a charger in the box. The bad news, for those interested in Samsung, is that it carries a conventional model.

The Xiaomi, on the other hand, is accompanied by a 67 W charger which, according to the brand, completely fills the device’s battery in 42 minutes.

VERDICT: Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G (almost).

Samsung Galaxy A23 5G

  • Rear: 50MP wide angle, 5MP ultra wide angle, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensor
  • Front: 8 MP wide angle

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G

  • Rear: 108MP wide angle, 8MP ultra wide angle and 2MP macro
  • Front: 16 MP wide angle

Principal

The two adopt a more focused setup for mid- and close-range photos, but the Samsung has a dedicated depth sensor, which improves the quality of those photos with a blurry background.

In the most used lenses (wide angle and ultra angle), Xiaomi goes on the offensive with a set that significantly exceeds the rival’s megapixels, which tends to be more useful for those who want to enlarge the photos.

Between pros and cons, the tendency is for this comparison to end in a draw.

VERDICT: a tie.

Selfie

Xiaomi’s camera beats Samsung’s by a large margin of megapixels, but the Galaxy A23 5G’s camera has a wider aperture shutter.

Translation: The larger the aperture, the more light reaches the sensor, and the better your low-light photos will be.

Again, between strengths and weaknesses, it is safe to call a draw.

VERDICT: they both win.

Samsung Galaxy A23 5G

  • Processor: Snapdragon 695 5G (octa core, 2.2GHz)
  • RAM memory: 4GB
  • Storage: 128GB (expandable via micro SD card)

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G

  • Processor: Snapdragon 695 5G (octa core, 2.2GHz)
  • RAM memory: 6GB
  • Storage: 128GB (expandable via micro SD card)

The set is practically identical: the processor is the same, as is the memory, which can be expanded via a micro SD card.

The difference is in the RAM memory. On cell phones, a good RAM reserve is something that tends to take an impact in situations like when you have several apps open and want to switch between them.

In a “native” way, Xiaomi takes advantage of having 6 GB against Samsung’s 4 GB. The Galaxy A23 5G, on the other hand, has a feature that allows you to allocate 4 GB of extra storage space to RAM during peak demand periods.

In the end, the performance of the devices tends to be very similar which makes them efficient for day to day tasks and still allows the users to risk one or the other game on them.

VERDICT: a tie.

Neither brings any innovative features. They are cell phones that aim to make “rice and beans”, with solutions already established as standard by the market.

VERDICT: a tie.

  • Samsung Galaxy A23 5G: BRL 2,299 (official price) or BRL 1,620 (retail)
  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G: BRL 3,679.99 (cash on the official website) or BRL 1,970 (retail)

This is where we answer the question at the beginning of the text. The Samsung Galaxy A23 5G is a recent release and costs R$2,299. On retail sites it is possible to find it for R$ 1,800 or even less when there is a discount.

The Xiaomi, on the other hand, has a high price in its official store and if we consider it, it is not worth it. The point is that at retail it is not at all difficult to find it sold for something around R$ 2,000, and there are often promotions that lower this value even further.

This makes it a better choice than the Samsung as it outperforms the competition in terms of looks, screen quality and even comes with a fast charger in the box.

FINAL RESULTS: Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G (if discounted price).
