For BRL 9.5k, iPhone S23 Ultra chest with 200MP camera and 100x zoom

Samsung announced this Wednesday (1st) the arrival of three new top-of-the-line mobile phones: Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 + and Galaxy S23 Ultra. Prices in Brazil start at R$5,999.

The news was made official at Galaxy Unpacked 2023, held by the South Korean company in San Francisco, California (USA), which was followed firsthand by Tilt.

Contrary to what is happening, the launch takes place simultaneously in Brazil: in previous years the models took some time to reach the national market after the start of sales in the United States.

Confirming the rumors, the mobiles have the same screen size as the previous generation, from 2022. The line will be sold in the colors: black, cream, green and purple.

Galaxy S23 Ultra: Bigger screen, more battery and compatible with S Pen.

  • 256GB: BRL 9,499
  • 512GB: BRL 10,499
  • 1TB: BRL 12,499

Galaxy S23+: intermediate model, with 6.6-inch screen.

  • 256GB: BRL 6,999
  • 512GB: BRL 7,999

Galaxy S23: simpler and smaller version

  • 128GB: BRL 5,999
  • 256GB: BRL 6,499

Obs.: In Brazil they will be sold with the charger in the package. And the launch values are the same as charged last year.

By way of comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro Max (128GB), which competes directly with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, has a suggested retail price in Brazil of R$10,499, going up to R$15,499 (1TB).

The debut of the new line comes a day after Samsung presented its financial results, in which the company posted its lowest profit in eight years. With the new Galaxy S23, the company is betting that it will attract consumers, even in a scenario of macroeconomic uncertainties and declining mobile phone sales.

Visual

Compared to the Galaxy S22 family, the back has changed the most on the S23 and S23+.

The design is cleaner, without the older more rectangular bezel around the lens, which you can see in the image below of the S22+ model.

Ultra has gained a larger curvature area on the screen – it’s a little straighter. It’s a difference that lies more in the details, it’s not very flashy. According to Samsung, the choice was for the S Pen to have an extra area to work with. As in the previous generation, there is a niche inside the device for storing the accessory.

Another differential of the Ultra is an additional camera in its quad set. The younger (and smaller) siblings work with three sensors each.

The devices of the S23 family have some components made with recycled materials, such as plastic from pet bottles, fishing nets discarded in the oceans and even aluminum (for the side buttons and the SIM tray).

The screen, made of Gorilla Glass Victus 2, is more resistant and includes 22% recycled glass. And everyone’s boxes are made from 100% recycled paper.

According to Renato Citrini, senior product manager of Samsung Brazil, the launches will have four updates of the Android operating system. Security updates will be pushed for five years, until 2028.

This is one of the ways to extend the useful life of smartphones, prevent users from switching devices in less time and increase technology waste.

Screen

  • S23 is 6.1 inches (15.49 cm)
  • S23+ is 6.6 inches (16.7cm)
  • S23 Ultra is 6.8 inches (17.27cm)

A novelty that seems interesting is the smart display (called Advanced Vision Booster), in which the device automatically adjusts color, tone and contrast in three different types of light during the day: a lower one, an intermediate one and the last with higher intensity (to be managed on a sunny day).

Example: On the S23, the maximum panel brightness can automatically reach 1,750 nits (luminescence measurement). This basically means that the device has an internal control that identifies whether the screen needs to receive more or less light to be visible to the user.

On a bright sunny day, it automatically reaches this maximum brightness. In standard use, it won’t exceed 1,200 nits.

cameras

Previous models have already highlighted the mode that Samsung calls Nightography (night photography, in free translation). What the company has done this year is improve the sensors and image processing system with the help of artificial intelligence.

Differentials:

Galaxy S23 Ultra

  • quad rear camera
  • The main sensor is capable of shooting photos at 200MP, up from the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s current 108MP. It manages to absorb more light when taking photos, and this also applies to videos – which is not so common among smartphones.
  • The whole size is enough to print a picture and create a large frame for your home for example.
  • The other cameras are: 12MP wide angle, 10MP periscopic telephoto and another 10MP telephoto – in the latter two the optical zoom is 10x.

The zoom of the S23 Ultra can reach up to 100x. That’s quite a lot compared to the competition (the iPhone, for example, doesn’t have it; it achieves a 3x optical zoom). However, at this maximum zoom it is difficult to focus on objects. Images come out very pixelated.

When we use “normal” (optical) zoom, the result is amazing. At least, on my first impressions.

You can also shoot 8K video at 30 frames per second with your mobile phone. The angle is also larger and reaches 80 degrees. In practice, this can give a more immersive effect to the movie.

night mode: The new sensor adapts image pixels by combining 16 pixels to form a larger one, thereby giving more brightness and retaining detail in photos taken in low-light locations.

Better stabilization for videos recorded at night by a technology that analyzes and breaks down movements and recognizes light conditions, explains Samsung.

Galaxy S23

  • Triple rear cameras (50MP main, 12MP ultra wide-angle and 10MP telephoto — with 3x optical zoom)
  • Maximum zoom reaches 30x (combining optical and digital zoom)

Galaxy S23+:

  • 50 MP main camera, 12 MP ultra-wide-angle and triple 10 MP telephoto rear cameras — with 3x optical zoom)
  • Maximum zoom reaches 30x (combining optical and digital zoom)

What’s in the three:

  • night mode for portrait effect (with background blur). Samsung promises that the mobile can recognize glasses, hair, clothes and keeps the whole set highlighted so that only the background is blurred.
  • Selfie. The three work with the same resolution: 12 MP. The S22 and S22+ each had a 10MP sensor – that’s a small difference. It wouldn’t be worth switching models just for that.

Battery

Between 2022 and this year, the battery capacity of the Galaxy S23 Ultra hasn’t changed: 5,000mAh.

The company explains that this was a decision made so that the structure of the mobile phone would not need to be modified (such as making it bigger to fit a larger battery).

In last year’s Ultra model, the battery held up well. With daily use, it lasted for a couple of days. The expectation is that 2023 will maintain this line.

The other two received improvements. Each one has 200mAh more than last year’s generation. Samsung has not disclosed how much this will impact users’ daily lives.

He only detailed that the appliances were manufactured to be more energy efficient. Therefore, batteries can be expected to last longer, at least in theory.

The three accept fast charging, but the S23+ and S23 Ultra are faster, as they are compatible with a 45 Watt fast charger.

The simplest cell phone can handle up to 25 Watts.

Performance

The processor of the three phones is the same: Snapdragon 8 gen 2 Galaxy, specially developed for launches. It’s that kind of device that can do anything without difficulty.

Unlike a few years ago, Samsung will not market the S23 line with an Exynos processor, produced by the same South Korean company.

The RAM memory (which helps with performance) of the three is 12GB (Ultra) and 8GB (in the other two).

Is it worth it?

It’s still too early to tell. However, information that can appeal to the person who is already sure that she will change her mobile phone to a new Samsung one.

In Brazil, the company has organized options for purchasing launches by giving away products (headphones or wireless chargers, for those who have pre-booked) or by offering more GB of storage space.

In the latter case: whoever buys the 128 GB S23 will take home the model with 256 GB of internal memory. The same goes for the 256GB S23+. The person will take the 512GB version, for example.

Overall, the S23 and S23+ have changed the least between last year’s generation than their pricier advanced sibling, the S23 Ultra. If you are thinking of investing in one of them, a tip is to wait a few more days. Several reviews should be posted soon.
